UK 4x4 Green Lane tours

Whilst you wont need to have a full expedition prepared 4x4 to enjoy one of our tours, there are a few things you will need and a handful of suggested items that we think will make your tour more enjoyable.

  • Off road biased tyres.

  • Waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear

  • Food and drink for during each day.

       SUGGESTED ITEMS

  • Equipment to make a hot drink or a flask

  • Camera

  • Breakdown cover

  • Change of clothing (wet mud can lead to dirty bottoms)

We start this tour near the border town of Kelso and finish near Newton Stewart, spending 3 days touring the regions of the Scottish Borders, South Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway and their green lanes. Being the depths of winter brings with it it's own beauty and challenges. Camping in potentially freezing temperatures and battling frozen tracks all add to the adventure. Plus, winter is the season of unbelievably clear skies, zero heat haze to effect the views and a freshness in the air that only certain parts of the UK can possibly have. This tour won't be "easy" purely because of the possible weather conditions. But from a vehicle point of view, it shouldn't be difficult either. We comfortably say that this tour is suitable for all 4x4s & SUVs with appropriate tyres and recovery points. Feel free to use the contact page to ask any further questions or discuss the tour in more detail.

4 days of the most epic and challenging green laning currently planned in the UK. And we've got 2 of them for you to go at... Travelling south to north through deepest darkest Wales is going to be a challenge for both vehicle and driver alike. Long days, technical tracks, concentration at every turn and potentially very wet and cold. Plus there's a good chance the winter tour will be worse!!!! This tour is not a bimble down a few tracks, its going to be intensive from Monday morning through to Thursday evening. There are points that need to be reached each day in order to get to camp. It wont be a problem and should be easily achievable, assuming there are no problems or delays along the way. That said, it will also be quite possibly the most enjoyable suffering you'll ever experience. Everyone on the tour is in exactly the same boat as you, we're all cold, wet and in need of a cuppa.  Or, if the weather plays ball, it could be a perfect few days of laning, firepits and campfire life. Who knows, but there's only one way to find out....... The Sunday night is the last night of proper comfort as the tour includes a night in a traditional country hotel near the Welsh town of St Davids. And of course that all important first meal of the day, a full breakfast. The rest of the overnight stays on the tour are at official wildcamp sites with minimal, if any, facilities. The route is provisionally planned and will consist of approximately 270 miles of driving. The route is subject to change due to closures or unavoidable circumstances and excessive rainfall that deems potential river crossing "dangerous" will be missed out. The entirety of the tour is designed to be along hard packed, rock based tracks and as undamaging to the surroundings and tracks as possible. We WILL NOT be mud bogging at any point. Due to the nature of this tour, we don't advise it suitable for inexperienced drivers or vehicles that don't have appropriate recovery points and equipment. We must also stress that it is highly likely to be scratchy at times and could potentially cause light bodywork damage. AT NO POINT WILL YOU BE EXPECTED TO DRIVE WHILE TIRED. IT IS YOUR DUTY TO INFORM THE TOUR LEADER AND AT WHICH POINT SUITABLE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE MADE

Baron. Vast. Historic. Empty. All hugely appropriate superlatives to describe the counties that make up the vast majority of the North of England. This absolute gem of a region is, in our humble opinion, home to arguably the best green laning in England. A massive array of tracks, views and experiences give untold options for the traveller. Through the duration of the tour we'll cover big distances and lots of trails, so stock up on the snacks. 3 days of genuinely fantastic green lanes, water crossings, viewpoints and camping. We've specifically designed this tour to be as suitable for all 4x4s & SUVs as possible. The planned routes are not overgrown, although some very light spring growth must be expected. And in the most part are more than suitable for standard vehicles with off road biased tyres fitted. On those few occasions where some line choice needs to be made, we'll spend the time needed to ensure safe passage for all guests. We begin on the North Yorkshire coast, weave our way across the Moors and Dales national parks before crossing the boundary into Cumbria and The Lake District National Park. Here we finish the tour on a byway right on the Cumbrian coast. For more information or the discuss your vehicles suitability, please use the contact page. All routes are subject to change due to weather or closures

Join us as we travel in the footsteps of Roman legionaries and centurions through ancient Wales from south to north. Originally we did this tour in 2024 over 3 days and it was a bit hectic to say the least. Combining the distance and the complexity of the tracks meant long days behind the wheel. So for 2025 we've made the tour 4 days long to make it a much more relaxing and chilled affair. But the tracks are just as challenging! Beginning in the Vale of Neath and at the site of a Roman Auxiliary fort of Nidvm. Here we begin our journey north and straight onto our first track, the southern seasonal section of Sarn Helen which is only open to vehicles for a short few weeks each year. This will be the first test and one to definitely saviour.   Over the next 4 days we continue north, using as much of the original route as possible. The tracks will vary from scenic and gentle right up to quite technical and challenging throughout the tour. With 2 further "main" sections of Sarn Helen and countless extra tracks to negotiate, by the time we arrive at our end point just south of Conwy and the fort of Canovivm you and your vehicle will be glad of the rest. Whilst this tour is open to all 4x4/AWD vehicles, we do stress the importance of some decent off road modifications. Absolutely essential is off road biased tyres (an all terrain pattern will be fine), some protection of any vulnerable parts underneath and substantial towing/recovery points. For more information or the discuss your vehicles suitability, please use the contact page. All routes are subject to change due to weather or closures

The perfect few days away green laning and camping in the absolutely stunning northern Pennines, coupled with what is guaranteed be a superb and brilliant day learning some bushcraft and foraging skills with Andy Hall. Bushcraft and Foraging? Who's Andy Hall? We'll start with the "Who's Andy Hall" bit first. Andy runs an outdoor skills site just south of Consett, County Durham. He has been teaching bushcraft and foraging for years and has featured on the BBC showing TV's Robson Green a few little tricks. With that, bushcrafting and foraging are two ancient skills that our long gone ancestors would have needed to know very well in order to survive. It covers everything from gathering and filtering drinking water, making natural cordage and wooden accessories, safe use of a knife and the one that probably makes everyone smile the most, primitive firelighting techniques. Plus Andy will show and surprise you with his vast knowledge of what plants are edible or have medicinal properties as he guides us around his woodland. We've already spent some time with Andy over the years and he has such a genuinely infectious character. He absolutely can not share enough of his knowledge with you and we can be certain not only will you learn something but you will have an absolute blast doing it. *The bushcraft and foraging course is perfectly suited for anyone over the age of 12 years old due to using knives The green laning is truly epic in this region!  The vast expanses of eastern Cumbria and Northumberland really do give you the feeling of being in a land that time forgot. The tracks are hugely varied and generally long, the scenery is massive and seemingly goes on forever and just to add even more to the pot, this area has some of the most beautiful river crossings in the UK, and lots of them! Day 1 is focused around Alston in Cumbria. Here we'll drive some of the tougher tracks from the tour as well as attempt the highest unpaved road in England.  Day 2 is with Andy at his Bushcraft site near Consett Day 3 is predominantly zig-zagging along Hadrians wall and working our way west and to our end point near to Hexham. With this tour being in the UK school summer holidays and mid-week, it lends itself brilliantly to spending a bit more time as a family exploring this truly amazing region. With everything from castles to modern art galleries and beaches to high fells, the north east of England is definitely one to discover.

Roughly 762 miles of full blown, unfiltered Scottish winter brilliance... From arriving at our first hotel on the 28th December, through all of the campsites, tracks and permissive access and right until departing our final hotel on the 9th January, this tour will be quite likely prove to be the best 4x4 winter tour available in the UK right now. You and your vehicle will absolutely need to be prepared for the Scottish wilderness. Scotland doesn't normally shout "challenging test of endurance" especially if you're in a car. And under normal circumstances you'd be right to think that. But factor in only 6ish hours of daylight each day, the potential for a lot of snow, we will be camping near the village with the joint lowest recorded temp in the UK (-27.2C not including wild chill.....) unexpected road closures and of course there's the possibility of some substantial winds!!! It can soon turn into a proper adventure. But lets not get too carried away. The far north of Scotland in winter can also be fine sunshine, crisp mornings, calm sea's and the most perfect place to stay the night. It's not at all uncommon to find the weather is about as perfect as you can get, plus there's far less campervans on the roads... Whilst it is a tour aimed at 4x4's you won't need anything special to complete this tour. It is primarily along surfaced roads with maybe 5-10% of the total distance being along tracks or broken tarmac. We only ask that as a minimum you don't have low profile tyres, that they are suitable for winter driving and you have a full size spare with you. Day 1 of the tour starts with us all meeting up at The Garth Hotel in Grantown on Spey. Here we will have a very nice evening meal, no doubt sample a few local drams before staying in one of their fine double or twin rooms for the night. Day 2 kicks off with a hearty and delicious full breakfast before we jump in our 4x4's for the first days drive. We'll tackle a couple of river crossings and narrow coastal routes as we weave our way north past Inverness and onto Invergordon (the home of the Worlds Strongest Brothers). Here is our last chance for supplies for today, so time to stock up. It's then on to our wildcamp for the night overlooking the Cromarty Firth. Day 3 see's us keep heading north and begin our time in the true wilds of Scotland. We stay pretty much on the east coast for today, sampling a few tracks and water crossings along the route. This is a fairly steady day behind the wheel as the east coast is traditionally less likely to be covered in snow and also usually has the gulf stream bringing in slightly warmer weather. But that's "usually" and who knows what may happen... Tonight's wildcamp is tucked away just off the official NC500 route and with almost uninterrupted views over the North Sea. Day 4. New Years Eve. No trip to the far north of mainland Scotland would be complete without the obligatory John o Groats signpost picture, so that's one of todays goals. But so is taking a stroll along the high cliffs of Duncansby to see the fabulous natural rock sea stacks and beach. We end the day at our next overnight spot at the most northerly settlement in mainland Britain. A proper campsite, a firepit and a glass of bubbly to see in the new year. Day 5. Quite possibly a later start today... But that's fine, its been planned for. Today is a chance to relax a bit as we concentrate on all the little nooks and crannies of this part of the Scottish coast. The first port of call though is the RSPB reserve of Dunnet Head, its lighthouse and to have a mooch around the most northerly bit of mainland Britain to help blow away the cobwebs of the previous nights shenanigans. The afternoon is a steady, incredibly scenic drive (with stops) along the NC500 route and to our next wildcamp site. This is when things can begin to get cold!!!!! Day 6 see's us head inland for the next couple of days. Proper single track roads that are regularly snow covered throughout winter, notoriously remote and usually devoid of other vehicles. This next 48 hours or so could well be the bit that proves to be by far and away the most difficult to finish. The aim is to spend the night at the location of the coldest recorded temperature in the UK. Day 7 is a continuation of the previous day in so far as its inland, narrow roads and remote. But also like the previous day, the scenery is absolutely breath-taking. The aim for tonight is to be at a proper campsite in a sheltered bay back up on the north coast. *Days 6 - 7 will require an element of self sufficiency as there are no fuel stations, shops or planned water stops along the route. Day 8. After the possible challenges of the previous couple of days, today should be a relative walk in the park. True NC500 route, with a cheeky detour or 2 along the way to find a few hidden winter gems. Tonight's stopover is again a wildcamp, but with a bit of a twist... Day 9 and its time to effectively start our journey south. We don't rush though, as this is the section that most regard as "The Proper Scottish Coastline". The wild, Atlantic battered west coast of Scotland. The plan for today (and for the next couple of days) is to explore the plethora of tiny little side roads that take us down to hidden coves, natural harbours and stunning white sand beaches. Who knows what lays ahead... Plus tonight's overnight stay is a bit of a surprise, we're very confident you'll like this one. Day 10. We continue along the rugged and beautiful west coast kind of following the traditional NC500 route, but with a few 4x4 required points along the way. We spend time exploring the Rubha Mor peninsula before heading south and our next overnight campsite that's almost on the beach. Day 11 and today is all about traditional picture postcard Scotland as we head along Loch Maree and onto Torridon before ending the day at our campsite nestled in the shadows of 1000m tall mountains. There will be a few detours along the way to get to the better vantage points, but this is a chilled day to just take in and enjoy the truly world famous scenery. Day 12 & 13. Possibly the longest of the driving days, purely because of what we try to fit in as we head onto the Isle of Skye for our last nights camping. These 2 days are all about box-ticking stunning locations. We could list all of the places we'll be visiting but it'd be a huge list and probably spoil the fun of finding out when you get there. Our final night is spent at a genuinely stunning location overlooking the shores of Loch Awe. A fine evening meal and a few drams to end the day, before retiring to a sumptuous king size bed for the night. Day 14. After an award winning breakfast and no doubt a stroll down to the loch shoreline, its time to say our goodbyes.

The Peak District.

Beautiful tracks over rolling hills and through quaint villages almost typifies the Peak District. A tour to concentrate on the spectacular scenery as much as the track surface, a nice relaxing tour suitable for almost any 4x4 (off road biased tyres and suitable tow points required).

North Wales

Quite possibly the best green laning available? And who are we to argue... Rocks, deep water crossings, baron moorlands and as much spectacular scenery as you can shake a muddy stick at. Suitable for all 4x4's with basic modifications (underbody protection, tow points etc).

Mid Wales

Long tracks, big open spaces and lots of rocks. This is the land of challenges! Yes there are simpler tracks to tackle, and we include those. But we also like to add a few tasty treats in there. So this means that proper off road biased tyres, underbody protection, rated recovery points and a preparedness to get stuck in are an absolute "must have" for our Mid Wales tours.

Yorkshire Dales

Probably one of the most scenic tours we offer. Even in horrible weather, the North Yorkshire Dales still manages to show up and show off. With a massive amount of tracks to go at and some interesting sections thrown in, the Yorkshire Dales should be on everyone list. Suitable for almost all 4x4s with basic green laning equipment fitted.

Shropshire

Quite possibly one of the most under-rated counties in England for its laning potential. Amazing tracks, fantastic scenery and more amazing tracks... With scrabbly climbs, a plethora of water crossings and some quite technical sections, Shropshire should be higher on your list than you maybe thought.

Cumbria

Funnily enough, Cumbria is much bigger than just The Lake District. This fantastic county has some truly amazing green lanes that don't fall inside the national park boundaries. With all of our Cumbria tours we include a great selection of these "outlying" tracks. Some you may have heard of, others maybe not. But all of them will tick the box

Scotland Island Hopper Tour

14 days of the finest scenery, the best tracks and some of the most perfect camping you can possibly imagine.

With a massive 790 islands dotted around the coast of Scotland, its no surprise that they're on the "to do" list for millions of people globally. With just 93 being still inhabited, it also makes them some of the most unspoilt and traditional islands in the heavily modernised western world.

On this tour we focus on the Inner and Outer Hebrides, primarily the isle's of Islay, Jura, Colonsay, South Uist, Eriskay, North Uist, Benbecula and the largest populated island, Harris & Lewis.

Along the way we will discover what makes these islands so special, why people hold them in such high regard and, of course, sample some of the best off road and green lane driving available.

The tour begins on the mainland and in the small town of Inveraray. Here we meet up and begin the drive to our first ferry port of Kennacraig. This should take about 90 minutes and see's us travel through some of the finest, and relatively unknown, Scottish scenery.

Once at Kennacraig, we board our first ferry across to Islay, aka The Whisky Isle. We spend a couple of nights on Islay, we visit one of the worlds finest whisky distilleries and sample some green lanes and coastal tracks that can only be matched by the camping locations.

Our next stop is Jura. We catch the small ferry from Islay to Jura in the morning and spend the next 24ish hours taking in everything this superb little island has to offer. We'll also be at a serviced campsite for tonight.

Returning back to Islay, we next catch a ferry to Colonsay and for what promises to be a genuinely special camp spot. We won't give too much away, only that access is tide dependant... The next day and a half are spent touring around the island and tackling a some epic coastal tracks, before we have to catch our next ferry. This time back to the mainland (temporarily).

The next ferry takes us out to South Uist and the start of our Outer Hebrides adventure. After a short trip across one of many the causeways that link the Outer Hebrides, we arrive at the isle of Eriskay, We spend the night carefully tucked into an almost perfect location.

The following 7 days are spent slowly weaving our way north through the islands, stopping at every available opportunity to experience island life and all it has to offer. Our island adventure ends as we board our last ferry from Stornoway back to the mainland and the port of Ullapool.

With a comprehensive mix of green lanes, private access and sublime wildcamp spots, it'd be hard pressed to find a more "box ticking" experience in Scotland.

The tour is suitable for all 4x4s & SUVs with off road biased tyres and a basic off grid/wildcamp set-up. It would be beneficial to be able to store water and food for a couple of days to allow more time away from the shops.
